Always store the international format
Write the number with the country prefix, for example +39 for Italy or +1 for the United States. A local-format number fails for anyone scanning while roaming or travelling, and that is exactly the audience most likely to use a printed code.
Size it for the scanning distance
A code on a van or a shop window is scanned from a metre or more. Use roughly one tenth of the scanning distance as the printed side length: 10 cm for one metre, 30 cm for three metres.

- Does the call start automatically?
- No. The scan opens the dialler with the number pre-filled and the person taps to call.
- Can I use an extension?
- Yes, most phones accept a pause and extension digits appended to the number, although behaviour varies by device.
- Should I use a phone code or a URL code?
- Use a phone code when calling is the only action you want. Use a dynamic URL code when you also want scan analytics or several contact options on one page.
